Memorial Day Ceremonies in the Bellevue/Offutt Community

Memorial Day is especially important in the Bellevue/Offutt Community as we take a day to honor all American soldiers who died while serving in the Armed Forces.

The Bellevue Leader is reporting that there are at least four opportunities for Bellevue area residents to attend a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday.

"Four ceremonies will be held in Bellevue on Monday to mark Memorial Day.

• An annual Memorial Day observance will be at 11 a.m. at the Bellevue Cemetery, located on the north end of Franklin Street at East 13th Avenue.

Participants and attendees will gather around the cemetery flagpole with the cemetery’s Avenue of Flags fully on display if weather permits. The ceremony is sponsored and organized by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10785. Prior to the ceremony, flags will be placed on veterans’ graves. The Sarpy Serenaders will perform a medley of patriotic song, wreaths will be laid and a representative of Gold Star Wives will be present.

• Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2280 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at Washington Park in Olde Towne. The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. and last an estimated 30 minutes. The ceremony will include a brief history of Memorial Day ceremonies, a reading of General John A. Logan’s Memorial Day Order, which dates from the conclusion of the Civil War, a rifle volley and the playing of Taps.

• A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Offutt Air Force Base beginning at 9 a.m. The ceremony will be held at Fort Crook Cemetery.

In case of bad weather, the ceremony will be held at the SAC Chapel at 25th Street and Capehart Road.

• A Memorial Day ceremony will also be held at 10 a.m. at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home at 40th Street and Capehart Road. A “Ringing of the Bell” will honor residents of the home who died during the past year and an ensemble will perform patriotic music."
