July 24th, 2012, Omaha, Neb.—  On Monday of this week, the Metropolitan Utilities District delivered 224 million gallons of water to the metropolitan area, the most water ever delivered by the District in a single 24 hour period.  The previous peak day consumption record was 223 million gallons, set on June 25th, 1988.  Water demand is currently averaging over 190 million gallons per day for the month of July.

  The District’s customers are continuing to use water responsibly and effectively.  As a result, the highest demands for water are occurring between the “cool” hours of  5 a.m. and 7 a.m.  Because of good customer habits and the District’s “Triangle of Reliability” (i.e. three water production facilities strategically located to serve the Metro area), there are no plans to restrict water usage based upon current and expected future demands.

Other than an increase of water main breaks due to extreme conditions, the water system is running efficiently and effectively and will continue to supply the needs of the community.  Only unforeseen events such as a major equipment failure could change that.  The water distribution system is monitored around the clock.

We also ask for patience with the increased level of water main breaks.  These breaks often require traffic restrictions posing danger to all involved. The safety of the public and our employees, along with restoring service as quickly as possible, are top priority.
