POSITION TITLE:                COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ASSISTANT
 
 
REPORTS TO:                      Fire Chief or Fire Chief’s Designee
 
SUPERVISES:                       ----------
 
PURPOSE OF POSITION:   Responsible for assisting in the installation, implementation and maintenance of the City’s communication system, including the telephone system, the civil defense warning siren system, and maintenance of the 800 MHZ and back-up radio communications system within the City and surrounding communities. Will be required to perform duties on an on-call basis as needed in the absence of the supervisor.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists with coordination of installs, replacements and repairs of communication equipment or forwards to appropriate source for repair/replacement.
 
Performs routine checks on all city communications equipment in order to test system performance and reliability.
 
Assist in the maintenance of the city’s mobile data radio system.
 
Perform maintenance checks on civil defense sirens and oversee major repairs and new installs.
 
Perform reprogramming on fire UHF and alpha-numeric pagers, 800 MHZ mobile and portable radios.
 
Keeps current with trends and developments in communications technology.
 
Assist with phone service install’s, repairs and maintenance.
 
Maintains inventory, reports and records pertaining to communications system.
 
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
 
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:
 
Knowledge of the technical concepts of mobile data radio systems and designs.
 
Knowledge of alpha-numeric paging systems and multi-code UHF paging systems.
 
Knowledge of and ability to apply methods, techniques and practices utilized in testing radio equipment and telephones.
 
Knowledge and concepts of telephone system both analog and digital and simulcast trunking philosophy and concepts.
 
Knowledge of geography and topography of the county.
 
Knowledge of and ability to read and interpret coverage maps pertaining to radio frequency coverage. 
 
Knowledge of civil defense warning system siren technology.
 
Knowledge of the mechanical, electrical and technical functions of communications systems and vehicle electrical systems.
 
Knowledge of and ability to utilize and operate a variety of computer programs.
 
Knowledge of T-1 concepts, telecommunications industry association standards and national electric code.
 
Ability to perform mathematical calculation with accuracy and attention to detail.
 
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 
 
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees, consultants, and the general public.
 
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all departmental documents and transactions.
 
Ability to work independently, prioritize work and meet deadlines.
 
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES
 
Must possess a valid State of Nebraska motor vehicle operators license and maintain it throughout the course of employment.

Work is performed indoors, but is occasionally performed outdoors and requires a considerable amount of physical activity including, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping and climbing. The incumbent must have the ability to transport themselves to and from various locations throughout the city and surrounding communities. Duties also require the ability to tolerate an indoor and outdoor work environment that includes contact with dirt, dust, noise, poor lighting and inclement weather conditions.

An incumbent must have the ability to frequently lift and/or carry various supplies and tools weighing up to eighty(80) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds and possess the coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate vehicles, computers and technical tools.
 
Vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
 
Work requires extensive interaction with the general public, private contractors, developers and other business relations and may be stressful when dealing with irate individuals.
